In the CLIMA-VERSE project, we do much more than create educational content and immersive experiences in the Metaverse. An equally important part of the project is raising students’ awareness of climate change and encouraging them to adopt more sustainable lifestyles.
When we think about recycling, we usually imagine sorting plastic packaging, paper, or glass. However, we often overlook another important issue: furniture that is still functional frequently ends up as waste simply because it is old, worn out, or no longer fashionable. Every year, large amounts of furniture are discarded, even though many items could be repaired, redesigned, and reused.
To challenge this mindset, students from SIC Ljubljana participated in the “Style Challenge: Creative Chair Upcycling”, an activity that combined creativity, practical skills, and environmental responsibility.
The challenge invited students to transform old and damaged chairs into unique, attractive, and functional pieces of furniture. Instead of throwing the chairs away, participants gave them a second life using textile techniques, recycled materials, and their own innovative ideas.
Working in teams and under the guidance of their mentors, students developed design concepts, selected suitable materials, sewed new upholstery, and completed the technical renovation of the chairs. Denim fabric and other textile leftovers were creatively repurposed, demonstrating how materials that might otherwise become waste can be transformed into something valuable and aesthetically appealing.
The results were impressive. Four completely redesigned chairs emerged from the project, each reflecting the creativity and personality of its creators. Some designs even included practical features such as storage pockets for mobile phones and personal belongings, proving that sustainable design can be both beautiful and functional.
Beyond the final products, the activity helped students better understand the principles of the circular economy, sustainable consumption, and responsible resource use. It encouraged them to think critically about waste generation and to recognise that extending the lifespan of products is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce our environmental impact.
The project demonstrated a simple but powerful message: sustainability is not only about recycling materials—it is also about reimagining the objects we already have. Sometimes, all it takes is a little creativity to turn something old into something new.
Through activities like this, CLIMA-VERSE continues to empower young people to become active contributors to a more sustainable future.
